One of the things I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like about him was his overuse of a phrase I found particularly grating. <strong>Whenever he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to deal with an issue, he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d proclaim \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m over it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong> It meant the conversation was over and the topic at hand no longer concerned him. <strong>Though I found it entirely aggravating, I think it is an incredible tool for handling stress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When I work on a project in the office, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to let the tensions built up in the cubicle or boardroom follow me out the door.<\/strong> I find myself especially irritated by crawling traffic, and notice extra tension in my shoulders all the way to bedtime (and even beyond). I quickly decided that I do not want to waste my leisure time wound up about issues beyond my control at the moment. Taking a page from the <em>guy I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like<\/em> <em>playbook<\/em>, <strong>I now spend a minute reminding myself that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m over it before I even get to my car in the parking lot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Stress: Release vs. Defeat<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve all heard of the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fight or flight\u00e2\u20ac\u009d response \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the way we handle the acute stress we feel in situations like when a bear has you at gunpoint (<em>I think I got that right<\/em>). As Chris Kresser<a href=\"http:\/\/thehealthyskeptic.org\/10-ways-stress-makes-you-fat-and-diabetic\"> points out<\/a>, <strong>psychologists have a term for how we handle chronic stress: the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153defeat response.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want our stressors to wear on us all day, and we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want them to beat us; we want to release our stress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is why I say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m over it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to myself instead of saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153whatever.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d To me, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153whatever\u00e2\u20ac\u009d applies when the situation is hopeless or beyond saving. <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m over it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is simply recognizing that the stressor is not important to you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What is important?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ten years from now, you will still care whether you have a spare tire and a pharmacy in your bathroom mirror.
