I’m Out of Shampoo

January 29, 2011

I’m not in the habit of posting shopping lists here, or asking for free samples from companies (though I’ll take them). So why let the world know that I’m out of shampoo? Because I’m going to see what happens if I don’t buy any more.

A quickly growing sector believes that they are cleaner if they forgo the sudsy stuff. If I like the results I get from skipping shampoo, I’ll next try dropping soap. This all sounds pretty bare-foot drum circle-y to me, so I need to ease in slowly.

See the second half for links and discussion on the subject.

I first started hearing about the idea of living sans shampoo from women interested in improving the quality and appearance of their hair, but interest has been growing.

I was planning to pile on a stack of links here, but there’s really no need. If you’re interested in reading other people’s take – just google “no shampoo soap” and you’ll get plenty. I do recommend Free The Animal’s 6 month and 18 month posts on the matter.

The idea is that the skin is populated with little oil geysers known as sebaceous glands to keep you all lubed up and looking good. Soap and shampoo rinse away that oil – provoking the glands to produce more – then you really need a shower. It sounds a lot like the feed-forward mechanism of developing insulin resistance.

So no more shampoo starting on Monday, 1/31/11. I will be showering just like usual, but I won’t use anything but water in my hair. I’ll keep a log of my experience and let you know how it goes.

*UPDATE* Check out my one-month update.
